The Douglas Udell Gallery is proud to announce the 30 year exhibition anniversary of Robert Lemay.

For over thirty years, the still-life paintings of Robert Lemay have quietly stressed the beauty of human experience, highlighting the arresting qualities of remarkable presence in his descriptions of everyday objects such as typewriters, flowers and candy jars. More recently Lemay has looked to book and magazine covers as source material to inform his painting practice. Largely influenced by Gerhard Richter’s idea that photography, rather than threatening painting, is a way to re-invigorate oil on canvas with the excitement of contemporary imagery, Lemay continues his painterly exploration of still-life conventions through the reproduced image. Unlike the mass-produced glossy magazine cover, paint acts as a kind of skin- a distinctive surface that transforms the original photograph into a singular, unique image.
